Council Proposes Betawi Culture to Be Included in School Curriculum

Jakarta City Council Chairman, Khoirudin proposed that Betawi culture be included in the curriculum of schools in Jakarta. He hoped, the Jakarta Education Agency (Disdik) could follow up and discuss the proposal.

"Hopefully, Betawi culture is not only present in bylaws or merely a part of ceremonial events, but also integrated into formal education in schools," he expressed, Monday (6/2).

According to him, schools play an important role in promoting social change, including in preserving and maintaining Betawi culture.

"Schools are decisive in how the sustainability of Betawi culture can be maintained, if it is taught to our children. And I will help with communication with the Education Agency," he explained.

He also emphasized the importance of authentic learning resources. He hoped that the Betawi cultural material taught in schools comes from books written directly by practitioners and Betawi cultural figures.

"Hopefully we all, the Betawi figures, can speak with one voice. Because, we will soon discuss the budget. Moreover, there will be an endowment for Betawi culture," he hoped.

Further, he emphasized the Jakarta City Council's commitment to prioritize the approval of the Bylaw on the advancement of Betawi culture. Currently, they are still waiting for the draft proposal from the Jakarta Government to be discussed in the Kebon Sirih parliament.

"Insya Allah (God willing), the bylaw for the promotion of Betawi culture will be our priority. We will discuss the process in the council after receiving the draft from the executive side," he closed.
